Prince of Persia (MS-DOS)

This one's such an influential game I figured it'd be better to get around to it sooner rather than later.

I have actually played this one before, but it was years ago and I mostly just ran through the first level for a bit watching the Prince skid around, then I fell onto some spikes and turned it off.

Karateka (Apple II)

Today's game is... Karateka, by legendary Prince of Persia developer Jordan Mechner. I've seen the game mentioned a lot, but I know next to nothing about it. So I thought I should probably check it out.

Contraption Zack (MS-DOS) - Guest Post

Ontraption Zack!

Not to be confused with Contract J.A.C.K.

Hell: A Cyberpunk Thriller (3DO)

Another game request! It's got 'Hell' written on the box, and it's for the 3DO so I can believe it, but I'm going to try to keep an open mind.

China Warrior (Turbografx-16)

Hey it's Liu Kang from Mortal Kombat! Uh, I mean Fei Long from Street Fighter! Or maybe that guy from Enter the Dragon...

Hudson Soft gave their PC Engine games volume numbers in Japan, and this is Vol 1 making it one of the very first games ever released for the console.

Banshee (Amiga CD32)

Low polygon 3d rendered text with a lens flare, how classy. And they haven't even bothered to fix those black pixels on the E. But I don't like to judge a game on its title screen... well actually I do, but I'll keep playing anyway.

Bubble Trouble (Lynx)

You don't tend to see many old guys with grey hair wearing a bathrobe as the protagonist in games these days.

Tuesday, 22 November 2011

Gender Wars (MS-DOS)

That's a weird title. Is this going to be some kind of arena combat game?

Cheese Cat-astrophe starring Speedy Gonzales (Master System)

It looks like it's mostly a cat-astrophe for poor Sylvester the Cat, who seems to become a victim of hit and run cheese theft.

The Wizard of Oz (SNES)

That's a fair attempt at reproducing the title card from the 1939 movie, though it doesn't look particularly amazing.

The Misadventures of Flink (Sega Mega CD)

They didn't even need to write 'Psygnosis' on screen, I can tell it's one of their games just from the logo.

Superman: Countdown to Apokolips (GBA)

It's Sooperman versus the minions of Darkseid in Kowntdown tu Apokolips!

It's hard to take a villain seriously when he deliberately misspells names to sound cool. Maybe if he had an album out he could get away with it.

Touring Car Champions (MS-DOS)

Released the same year as Need for Speed 2, Gran Turismo, TOCA, Diddy Kong Racing, Wipeout 2097 etc... but can it compete?

Sunday, 13 November 2011

Airwolf (NES)

I've never seen the tv series so I've got no idea what to expect from this. Except a helicopter obviously.

Shining Force (Genesis/Mega Drive)

Okay today I'm on the Sega Mega Drive and I'm playing Shining Force... the legacy of great intention? Sounds a bit ominous, maybe. I heard somewhere that roads paved with good intentions can lead to bad places.

Beavers (Amiga CD32)

I'm going to guess this one's a cute platformer. With weirdly catchy music.

It's nice to find an Amiga game with an actual jump button, instead of using up on the joystick. For some reason it starts with only 'music' selected, but I can switch it to 'music + sound effects'.

Dive Alert (NGPC)

Like Pokémon Red and Blue, Dive Alert comes in two versions, Matt and Becky. Boringly they both have the same title screen, just with a different title.

Zaxxon's Motherbase 2000 (32X)

I'm not sure what's going on there, but it has explosions so surely it can't be that bad.

Saturday, 5 November 2011

Adventures of Yogi Bear (SNES)

"HERE COMES YOGI!" the game yells, while this... face hurtles towards you out of the darkness.

Friday, 4 November 2011

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (GBA)

By request, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring on the Nintendo GBA. I'm guessing it's some kind of rpg, but beyond that I've got no idea what to expect.

Kyatto Ninden Teyandee (NES)

Another requested game, Kyattou Ninden Teyandee a.k.a. Samurai Pizza Cats! The game never got an English language release, but I'm sure I'll be able to figure it out. Unless it's an rpg, or an adventure game, or a quiz etc. Then I won't.

Wednesday, 2 November 2011

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA)

And now, by request, I'm playing Mario & Luigi - Superstar Saga. All I know about this game is it's not a platformer, and there's apparently a bit of a travelling theme as they've put a suitcase on the title screen.

Thousand Arms (PSX)

This is one I was asked to play, so I'm expecting great things from it. Or bad things. Looking at the title, I'm betting on it being a Japanese rpg, which means it could go either way. Though I've been wrong before, for all I know it could be millipede racing.
